FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sam is currently A-tier in Brawl Ball with a score of 80/100. As a Tank, Sam absorbs frontline damage and creates space for teammates to push, making it a reliable pick when the meta favors Brawl Ball.
Run Hearty Recovery as the default Star Power for Sam — it works in most situations. Switch to Remote Recharge on maps that punish your main weakness. For Gadgets, Magnetic Field is the standard active pick; Pulse Repellent is situationally better on specific map types. Speed and Shield Gears are the standard choice.
Sam struggles against Brock and Piper, who can out-trade Sam at the ranges or map types where Sam is most exposed. On the flip side, Sam consistently beats Charlie and Poco.
Sam performs best in Brawl Ball (A-tier, 80/100). The Tank kit — absorbs frontline damage and creates space for teammates to push — is directly rewarded in Brawl Ball, which is why Sam climbs higher here than in other modes. See the mode ratings section for a full breakdown.
Sam pairs best with Gene and Poco. Since Sam absorbs frontline damage and creates space for teammates to push, teammates that cover the opposite role — whether that is frontline presence, healing, or ranged poke — create the most complete comp.
To play Sam well, focus on Brawl Ball where the mode rating is highest, and lean into being a Tank that absorbs frontline damage and creates space for teammates to push. Run Hearty Recovery as the core build, track Brock and Piper on the enemy team, and pair with Gene and Poco when possible.

HOW TO PLAY SAM

Sam launches his knucklebusters forward in a powerful melee hook and his Super sends his gauntlets sliding across the ground, dealing sustained damage along their path before Sam retracts them. He is a melee tank who can fight at mid-range with his gauntlet toss, giving him more flexibility than pure close-combat brawlers. He excels in corridor-heavy modes where the gauntlet slide cannot be easily sidestepped.

Sam's gauntlet Super deals damage both during the forward slide and while it retracts, so position yourself so that enemies must pass through the gauntlet return path after dodging the initial forward throw. His punch attack is also a reliable close-range option while the gauntlets are away.

PRO TIPS

Tank Game Plan
Position between enemies and your team. Your value comes from soaking damage, not dealing it. Choose Hearty Recovery in most situations, switching to Remote Recharge on maps where enemies can close distance. Charge your Super passively by staying in fights and engage with it to set up teammates, not to escape.
PRIORITY
Draft Around Counters
Watch for Brock or Piper. Both Magnetic Field and Pulse Repellent are in your kit — learn which one punishes your counters versus which gives you an escape window. Use your Gadget early rather than saving it for a desperate moment.
MATCHUP
Best Team Shape
Pair Sam with Gene or Poco when possible. Build toward Hyper Fist in safe positions — it swings fights instantly, so activate it when your team has the edge, not when you are already behind.
