FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Gene is currently S-tier in Gem Grab with a score of 88/100. As a Support, Gene heals and buffs teammates to sustain favorable engagements, making it a reliable pick when the meta favors Gem Grab.
Run Magic Puffs as the default Star Power for Gene — it works in most situations. Switch to Spirit Slap on maps that punish your main weakness. For Gadgets, Lamp Blowout is the standard active pick; Vengeful Spirits is situationally better on specific map types. Speed and Shield Gears are the standard choice.
Gene struggles against Piper and Brock, who can out-trade Gene at the ranges or map types where Gene is most exposed. On the flip side, Gene consistently beats Emz and Gale.
Gene performs best in Gem Grab (S-tier, 88/100). The Support kit — heals and buffs teammates to sustain favorable engagements — is directly rewarded in Gem Grab, which is why Gene climbs higher here than in other modes. See the mode ratings section for a full breakdown.
Gene pairs best with Melodie and Leon. Since Gene heals and buffs teammates to sustain favorable engagements, teammates that cover the opposite role — whether that is frontline presence, healing, or ranged poke — create the most complete comp.
To play Gene well, focus on Gem Grab where the mode rating is highest, and lean into being a Support that heals and buffs teammates to sustain favorable engagements. Run Magic Puffs as the core build, track Piper and Brock on the enemy team, and pair with Melodie and Leon when possible.

HOW TO PLAY GENE

Gene fires a magic hand projectile that extends far across the map, and if the hand grabs an enemy it pulls them directly toward Gene for immediate close-range follow-up. His Super launches the hand in a wide arc that snaps the grabbed enemy toward Gene's position, allowing him to pluck priority targets out of safe positions behind walls. He is a defining Gem Grab pick since he can pull the gem carrier off the mine from enormous range.

Gene's pull is most impactful when used on the enemy gem carrier when they are isolated near the mine, as pulling them through your entire team almost guarantees a kill. In team compositions with melee brawlers, pair Gene with brawlers who can immediately follow up on a pulled target.

PRO TIPS

Support Game Plan
Stay alive first, support second. Position behind your carry, not beside them. Take Magic Puffs in most situations, switching to Spirit Slap on maps where enemies can close distance. Use Gadgets proactively at 50% teammate HP, not when they are nearly dead.
PRIORITY
Draft Around Counters
Watch for Piper or Brock. Both Lamp Blowout and Vengeful Spirits are in your kit — learn which one punishes your counters versus which gives you an escape window. Use your Gadget early rather than saving it for a desperate moment.
MATCHUP
Best Team Shape
Pair Gene with Melodie or Leon when possible. Build toward Hyper Hands in safe positions — it swings fights instantly, so activate it when your team has the edge, not when you are already behind.
