FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Spike is currently S-tier in Gem Grab with a score of 88/100. As a Controller, Spike denies zones and controls objective access with area abilities, making it a reliable pick when the meta favors Gem Grab.
Run Fertilize as the default Star Power for Spike — it works in most situations. Switch to Curveball on maps that punish your main weakness. For Gadgets, Popping Pincushion is the standard active pick; Life Plant is situationally better on specific map types. Speed and Shield Gears are the standard choice.
Spike struggles against Edgar and Mortis, who can out-trade Spike at the ranges or map types where Spike is most exposed. On the flip side, Spike consistently beats Bull and El Primo.
Spike performs best in Gem Grab (S-tier, 88/100). The Controller kit — denies zones and controls objective access with area abilities — is directly rewarded in Gem Grab, which is why Spike climbs higher here than in other modes. See the mode ratings section for a full breakdown.
Spike pairs best with Emz and Gale. Since Spike denies zones and controls objective access with area abilities, teammates that cover the opposite role — whether that is frontline presence, healing, or ranged poke — create the most complete comp.
To play Spike well, focus on Gem Grab where the mode rating is highest, and lean into being a Controller that denies zones and controls objective access with area abilities. Run Fertilize as the core build, track Edgar and Mortis on the enemy team, and pair with Emz and Gale when possible.

HOW TO PLAY SPIKE

Spike fires a cactus ball that explodes into a ring of sharp spines on impact, covering a circular area that deals heavy damage to any brawler walking through it. His Super creates a slowing zone that also deals damage, one of the best Super abilities in the game for controlling objectives. He is a tier-one pick in almost every mode because his damage, zoning, and slowing capabilities are all high quality.

Aim Spike's cactus ball so the explosion ring covers the space immediately behind a retreating enemy rather than directly at them, as the ring spines continue dealing damage while they linger and enemies frequently run through them while backpedaling. His slowing Super is most impactful when placed directly on the objective rather than in enemy territory.

PRO TIPS

Controller Game Plan
Build your Super from safe positions and deploy it on the objective approach route, not reactively. Take Fertilize in most situations, switching to Curveball on maps where enemies can close distance. A Super that wins map control is worth more than one used defensively.
PRIORITY
Draft Around Counters
Watch for Edgar or Mortis. Both Popping Pincushion and Life Plant are in your kit — learn which one punishes your counters versus which gives you an escape window. Use your Gadget early rather than saving it for a desperate moment.
MATCHUP
Best Team Shape
Pair Spike with Emz or Gale when possible. Build toward Blooming Season in safe positions — it swings fights instantly, so activate it when your team has the edge, not when you are already behind.
