FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Surge is currently A-tier in Knockout with a score of 76/100. As a Damage Dealer, Surge sustains high damage at mid range and wins straight-up duels, making it a reliable pick when the meta favors Knockout.
Run To the Max! as the default Star Power for Surge — it works in most situations. Switch to Serve Ice Cold on maps that punish your main weakness. For Gadgets, Power Surge is the standard active pick; Power Shield is situationally better on specific map types. Speed and Shield Gears are the standard choice.
Surge struggles against Piper and Brock, who can out-trade Surge at the ranges or map types where Surge is most exposed. On the flip side, Surge consistently beats Poco and Gene.
Surge performs best in Knockout (A-tier, 76/100). The Damage Dealer kit — sustains high damage at mid range and wins straight-up duels — is directly rewarded in Knockout, which is why Surge climbs higher here than in other modes. See the mode ratings section for a full breakdown.
Surge pairs best with Gale and Emz. Since Surge sustains high damage at mid range and wins straight-up duels, teammates that cover the opposite role — whether that is frontline presence, healing, or ranged poke — create the most complete comp.
To play Surge well, focus on Knockout where the mode rating is highest, and lean into being a Damage Dealer that sustains high damage at mid range and wins straight-up duels. Run To the Max! as the core build, track Piper and Brock on the enemy team, and pair with Gale and Emz when possible.

HOW TO PLAY SURGE

Surge fires a split-shot that divides into two projectiles on impact and his Super powers him up through four distinct upgrade levels, each dramatically improving his attack, health, or movement speed. Reaching level four Surge provides exceptional performance that often single-handedly carries a fight. He requires survival early in a match to activate his upgrades, making HP management and positioning critical.

Prioritize Surge's survival over aggression in the early match so he can reach upgrade levels three and four, where his performance dramatically exceeds other brawlers. His split shot deals maximum damage when both projectiles hit the same target, so aim at enemies near walls where the ricocheted second shot connects.

PRO TIPS

Damage Dealer Game Plan
Hold mid range and maintain spacing. Advance during the enemy's reload, retreat during your own. Take To the Max! in most situations, switching to Serve Ice Cold on maps where enemies can close distance. Force trades only when you are at full health.
PRIORITY
Draft Around Counters
Watch for Piper or Brock. Both Power Surge and Power Shield are in your kit — learn which one punishes your counters versus which gives you an escape window. Use your Gadget early rather than saving it for a desperate moment.
MATCHUP
Best Team Shape
Pair Surge with Gale or Emz when possible. Build toward Stage 5 in safe positions — it swings fights instantly, so activate it when your team has the edge, not when you are already behind.
